Club Records Falling As Athletes Make Up For Lost Time
With the recent changes to Covid restrictions on sports, the track community is seeing a return to normal for competitions in the Lower Mainland.
On June 30, the Mustangs hosted their 6th track meet in two months and it was a special occasion as the first opportunity to invite athletes from other clubs to compete. The response was big with over 40 high school and post-secondary athletes from numerous clubs attending the meet. Coach Lenton was happy with the response from other clubs and with his athletes’ performances: “We have seen a steady improvement in our athletes’ competition level, numerous club records being set in all age groups, and first-year athletes successfully navigating the steep learning curve of competition after so many months of just training.”

Langley Mustangs Track and Field Club is ‘getting towards normal,’
Langley Mustangs Track and Field Club has managed to make it through the COVID-19 pandemic by being “agile,” as club president Kevin Harrison put it.
“Because of COVID, we had to be kind of flexible,” Harrison told the Langley Advance Times.
As of Saturday, Feb. 20, Harrison estimated membership numbers were almost back to pre-COVID levels, thanks to a creative approach that has seen the club introduce new off season training for junior development and high school aged athletes, and may see them holding smaller training sessions, more often, at Langley tracks other than McLeod Athletic Park (MAP), their home base.

Langley Mustangs at the Valley Cross Country Meet
On October 24, 2020, our Mustangs attended the Valley Cross Country Meet. It was cold and windy. However, for the runners it couldn’t be any better, because for approximately 10 minutes life was normal.
“It was exciting for competitors and coaches to have an opportunity to compete during this time of Covid restrictions”, as noted by Coach Andrew Lenton.
The Valley Royals did a great job adapting the event to the Phase 3 restrictions and provided the runners with a safe and fun competition.
Per Coach Andrew, “The Mustangs had a strong showing at the event with top finishes in elementary, high school and senior categories.”
The day started with 3 of our Grade 4/5 girls finishing in the top 5 and our Mustangs continued to compete well throughout the day.
Thank you coaches and runners for a strange but great 2020 season!
